I never thought of myself as someone who would get into wine tasting, much less Missouri wines. Me a couple decades ago: Good Missouri wines — oxymoron. Well, emphasis on the moron. Now, I know better. I have now visited wineries inside and outside the United States. I’m glad to report that Missouri wines stack up very well, both on tasting but also on scenic places to sample our local grapes.
In fact, there’s a stretch of highway in eastern Missouri called Scenic 94 that offers a bounty of beautiful wines, stunning scenery and friendly people to while away an afternoon or a weekend or even a week. Let me sample a wine flight with a Norton, a Chambourcin or Vidal Blanc as I sit under a shade tree on the rolling hills of Noboleis Vineyards near Augusta, Mo. Or watch the Missouri River flow by as I sip a beautiful red on the upper deck of Oak & Front in Washington, Mo. The Show Me state’s wine scene has changed dramatically in recent years — and I’ll be sharing more about one of my favorite spots on earth in coming months.
