A whole new world of travel just opened up at the new and improved Kansas City International Airport.
On Feb. 28, KCI unveiled to the flying public its $1.5 billion venue and I was on one of the first Southwest flights out that morning — a quick roundtrip to Dallas and back to celebrate opening day.
Time-warp airport
Kansas City residents (including me) may have had a soft spot for the quaint convenience of the old airport. But more people hated our city’s airport -especially anyone stuck there on a layover or during a flight delay. It was built for the day when you could get dropped at the curb and walk right into your gate, with none of today’s mandatory safety screenings and security checks.
Welcoming Kansas City vibe
It’s hard to imagine an airport that better represents the spirit of Kansas City. It’s filled with wide open, light-filled spaces. You can spot local art around every corner, at every gate (check out the Charlie “Bird” Parker art installation of ‘flying saxophones’ or a photographic triptych by Kati Toivanen, a faculty member at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and airport aisles are dotted with mosaics.)
Plus, the new airport exudes a welcoming vibe that manages to be culturally sophisticated with just the right touch of cowtown kitsch. Food and drink spaces lean hard on local favorites (Boulevard Beer, Brown & Loe restaurant, Parisi Coffee and an American Royal space that will feature rotating ‘cue favorites). Finally an airport that gives travelers a real taste of Kansas City. And did I mention the delicious smells? I can’t think of another airport infused with the tantalizing aroma of the world’s best barbecue.
Everything’s up to date
The welcoming feeling extends to the latest in inclusive practices and conveniences as well, including some all-gender restrooms as well as family restrooms, nursing rooms and even pet restrooms.
Complaints in early weeks have centered on traffic jams as people pick up at the arrivals entrance, a problem that likely will fade as people learn to navigate the airport’s new setup. Looking forward to flying again soon and giving the new airport a workout!
